Excerpts from the Arab and Iranian Media & Analysis of US Policy in the Region

Ghannouchi and Ennahda said to be demanding more ministries if Essid falls

Translated in part from an Al-Arab report today: “…Ghannouchi, who had been concealing his full support for Essid, had anticipated Monday’s meeting between the latter and Essebsi by saying to Nessma TV that he welcomed Essebsi’s initiative to form a national unity government, even described it as being a “positive psychological shock.” However, he added in a threatening tone: “If the inclination to form such a government prevails, Ennahda Movement will demand its right to wider representation, going in line with its political size based on the results of the previous legislative elections.” And observers believed that Ghannouchi’s statements, particularly what he said on Monday regarding the fact that “whoever has a magic solution can step forward and rule the county,” were an implicit and direct threat to Essebsi, saying that Essid enjoyed his support. According to leaks, Ennahda may have informed Essebsi it wanted 6 or 7 ministerial portfolios, including the interior, justice and finance ministers, in exchange for relinquishing Essid.”
