Excerpts from the Arab and Iranian Media & Analysis of US Policy in the Region

Let the softening begin: Now ISIS is being portrayed in royally-owned media as progressive for letting women drive

Translated by our today:

On May 29, the Qatari-owned Al-Quds al-Arabi daily carried the following report by its correspondent in Mosul Omar al-Jaburi: “Eyewitnesses in Mosul said they saw women driving cars alone in the various areas and suburbs of the city. A source said that the Islamic State organization elements were watching women driving cars in the areas under their control across the bridges, streets and the city’s intersections, without stopping them, which revealed that the organization did not mind that. An element from the organization’s Hisbah [Accountability] branch, spoke to Al-Quds al-Arabi on condition of anonymity, assuring: “There is no religious text saying that women are prohibited from driving cars or that this act is even detestable. Women used to ride camels and horses inside and outside the cities and the Messenger PBUH did not prohibit it. So how can we prohibit women’s driving?”

“He continued: “Moreover, women’s driving is safer and less exposing to women than riding a camel or a horse. Saudi Arabia is prohibiting women’s driving, at a time when the Caliphate State has given women the freedom to move in accordance with the shari’a restrictions.” In exclusive statements to Al-Quds al-Arabi, Mrs. Umm Barra’ spoke about women’s driving by saying: “I have been driving for ten years and I still am, and I did not face any pressures because of that. I am an employee at a state administration and I go to work in my car every day. And I cross the Islamic State checkpoints without ever facing any rejection or proscription by whichever element from the organization.””
