A very depressing 50,000th translated article: Israelis said to believe Assad will use chemical weapons

Almost nine years after starting Mideastwire.com, this is the 50,000th article we have translated…. very sad:

On April 12, the independent Al-Rai al-Aam daily carried the following report by its correspondent in Jerusalem: “Israeli sources expressed a growing concern over the use of chemical weapons on the part of the Syrian regime as the battles are drawing closer to Damascus. The sources said that “Israel believes that the Syrian army took a decision to prevent the rebels from proceeding into Damascus and is threatening the rebels and their leaders of death for the first time. This is warranted through the use of the chemical weapons.”

“The sources mentioned that the developments seen in Syria a few days ago created a wide military tension in Washington and Jerusalem. The two capitals were certain that chemical weapons will be used within a short period of time in the Syrian war.

“Unlike the previous Israeli estimates, the Israeli sources saw that President Bashar al-Assad will be able to settle the battle in front of the armed men. The Debka website that is closed to the Israeli Mossad indicated that “the battles seen in Syria days ago indicate that President Al-Assad and his brother Maher who commands the fourth battalion and the Syrian Republican Guards succeeded in halting the progress of the fighters in the direction of the Syrian capital….”
