“Shallow Christians” and Deception is Useful

I was struck and disheartened by two quite illiberal ideas from Mike Young this week:

“…Christians have used the fate of their coreligionists in Iraq as a cautionary tale for what awaits minorities in the Middle East. That’s a shallow way of looking at things.”

— How the mass murder of Iraqi Christians is used in a shallow manner is beyond me. We all need to be careful from our relatively comfortable perches here in Beirut to pronounce shallowness I think.

“…Last week, the director of national intelligence, James Clapper, told the Senate Armed Services Committee that he believed Al-Qaeda in Iraq had infiltrated Syrian opposition groups, and was behind bombings in Damascus and Aleppo. Clapper needn’t have made that statement publicly. Not surprisingly, the Syrian opposition read it as a sign of American hostility toward its aspirations.”

— Well it was the truth…a truly Liberal sentiment.
