Careless on Bashar

In Traub’s piece on FP today Andrew says this: “Bashar and his wife are very seductive,” says Andrew Tabler, a Syria expert at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. “You meet with them, and you’re just amazed.” Bashar will promise to let Lebanon stand on its own two feet, or to stop supplying Hamas with weapons. “And then,” Tabler says, “it never happens.”

I really wonder where Andrew pulled this bit on Hamas from – indeed, EVEN IN WIKILEAKS Assad has been clear in NOT promising to stop supplying weapons all around (that is in the rare moments when he more or less admits to such efforts). He has been consistent, it seems in my reading, in saying basically, hey, if you want an end to my support for Hizb and Hamas then you need to deliver on our demands, including full Golan withdrawal.

So what is Andrew talking about – or is this mere journalistic color?
