Israel Fires Away, Congress Pays
Pentagon Asks Congress for $647 Million to Re-stock Israeli Arsenal
The Pentagon has asked Congress for a $647 million arms package that would replenish munitions Israel spent during the week-long bombing campaign against Hamas in the Gaza Strip with emphasis on munitions capable of destroying underground targets. The latter would, in certain cases, obviate the need for ground troops to reach the same objective. Bloomberg is reporting that a portion of the new grant would be for kits that give regular bombs satellite-guided capability; as well as 2,000 pound “bunker-buster” bombs. During the Gaza campaign, a large number of targets the Israelis attacked were underground.
