A very interesting piece from the week of June 6 Aftab-e Yazd – a reformist oriented daily – which is one small indication of the continuing divisions within Iran…. which is not to agree with the CNN/US CONGRESS version of the Green Revolution on the cusp of, and the best hope for, change in Iran.
The daily reported: “The 21st death anniversary of the Islamic Republic founder, Ayatollah Khomeyni, was held in Imam Khomeyni’s shrine, and was attended by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamene’i…
“When Ahmadinezhad gave a pre-sermon speech and talked about the crimes of the Zionist regime, reminding the recent Israeli measures and condemned them, the people started to chant slogans “Down with Israel”. The president asked them to keep silence with a gesture and said: “You will have time to applause”. In the meanwhile, when Ahmadinezhad referred to those individuals, who neglected the vote of people during the presidential elections and those powers, who considered themselves as landowners in Iran, people started to chant “Iconoclast Ahmadi break down the great icon” slogan. Ahmadinezhad remained silent for a while and afterwards said: “Please”. Once Mohammad Ali Ansari notified the president about the lack of time, Ahmadinezhad turned to him and said:” Well, you can go, please”. Ahmadinezhad turned to the head of central HQ for commemorating Imam Khomeyni once again, who was standing next to him and said: “Please, you go, it is not nice that you are standing here, I will come, you go”.
“After Ansari’s notification, Ahmadinezhad continued his speech for more than 15 minutes. There was another group and apart from other slogans and worshippers eulogy, they were chanting “Iconoclast Ahmadi, break down the great icon”…”
